MicroFocus Software has extensive experience creating database
systems and doing website design for our corporate
clients. These databases and websites are tailored to exactly what the
client wants and needs. The databases we develop fall into three
categories Internet, intranet and LAN. In many cases the
databases interface extensively with software systems the client already
has. In this case, the systems we develop not only contain the customized
database the client is building and running their business on but also serves
as the "software glue" that ties many of their existing software systems
together.
An example of this database development would
be the Timecard Entry Database (TED) we developed. TED posts the
entered data directly to the ADP payroll system that creates the employee
paychecks. TED also sends the data to the Solomon financial system that
keeps all the company's financial records. TED imports reports from the
HR system and makes them available so administrators have easy access to
employee vacation, sick and personal time. TED also interfaces to an
expense database so that employee expenses can be reimbursed via employee
paychecks.
Our website design and database
applications use Microsoft technologies, specifically, Visual Studio .NET,
ASP.NET, Visual Basic .NET, C#, SQL Server 2000, and Access
2000. The end user is provided a visual interface to get data
into and out of the database and to report on it. SQL Server or Access is
used to contain the data that the end user accesses. If the amount of
data is less than about 200 MB and the number of concurrent users is less than
12 then Access is generally used; otherwise SQL Server is used.
Microsoft Office Automation
MicroFocus Software has created a wide variety of
applications based on Microsoft Office products, especially Excel. Many
of our clients have made extensive use of spreadsheets for a variety of
business purposes such as reporting, budgeting and tracking client
activity. Clients don't want to have to give up their familiar programs,
like Excel, just because they want to have some functions automated.
MicroFocus Software has automated a number of Excel workbooks for
clients providing them with a form interface much like VB or Access but still
allowing the user to get to the underlying spreadsheet when necessary.
For example, a job we did for an outplacement agency saved them an enormous
amount of time in the reporting function we implemented. Many ad hoc
reports that management wanted that would have taken days to create using
manual methods. Now they can compare revenues from branch offices
immediately with a familiar point and click interface.
